iTunes Review

From the opening verse of “Are You Gonna Waste My Time?,” listeners may experience a sense of deja vu: the barroom shuffle-stomp of Zeus’ guitars and Neil Quin's vocals have a familiar '70s kind of vibe (think Steely Dan, Mott the Hoople, Big Star), and the song burrows in deep with solid hooks. The Toronto band’s second full-length on the estimable Arts & Crafts label rolls along with a faintly Beatles-esque vibe on the next track, “Love/Pain,” with strings, pianos, and Quin’s voice, which seems to have transported itself from some stray 1974 FM radio airwave. There's no indie/hipster irony, chillwave cool, or electroclash flash to be found here. It's only solid, memorable, and smart pop music using the basic DNA of classic rock: guitars and keys, gleaming harmonies, and catchy melodies that flow effortlessly. With a Polaris Prize nomination for their 2010 debut (Say Us) under their belts, Zeus should feel pretty confident about accolades for Busting Visions. It’s as flawless and joyful a celebration—and reinventon—of “classic rock” as any we’ve heard yet.

After parting ways with the 6ixty8ights, childhood friends (and ten-year veterans of the Toronto music scene) Mike O'Brien and Carlin Nicholson reunited to play shows as Paso Mino, the backing band of Broken Social Scene member Jason Collett. The two started recording music together for fun...
