Work in Progress
It's always good to know that talented singers aren't limited only to sopranos and tenors. Erwin Schrott has an average-sized voice with some distinctive coloration - he sounds as though he is a true basso cantate, not the "bass-baritone" so commonly found today. The bottom of the voice sounds comparatively weak, but it is never forced. Similarly, the top has some presence, but it is clearly not the most interesting part of the voice. He enjoys the verbal play during the Mozart recitatives and arias, and he sings them well. The "big" pieces (the Verdi items, mostly) don't come across especially well, as the voice sounds overparted and he does not have the proper size and amplitude of voice to do the music justice. He gets kudos for singing the Don Carlo and Vespri excerpts in the original French, but they still sound rather immature in conception and sketchy in execution. Mr. Schrott is still a young singer, so I would hope that he will eventually "grow" into these parts! As to the near future, here's hoping he turns to the bel canto repertory!
