EDITORS’ NOTES

"Aromanticism is a concept album about lovelessness as a sonic dreamscape," Moses Sumney stated in a blog post. "It seeks to interrogate the idea that romance is normative and necessary." It’s also a debut album that establishes its author as a very special voice. The exquisite “Quarrel”—all foreboding bass, levitating harp, and trippy soul—is spine-chilling, “Make Out in My Car” glides by suggestively with a chemtrail of flutes, and on the acoustic “Indulge Me,” Sumney is sincere, vulnerable, and quietly devastating.

....to say this is beautiful and haunting music, from his voice to the production.

One of the most unique artists I've heard

I am blown away by this man's talent. The song "Doomed" is the song of the year; it is brilliant, beautiful and haunting. I will go wherever this voice leads, and I already want to hear more.

Fantastic new talent

Jared Carmona

Love the album, however, I read the article spotlighting him in the times and while I understand his need to break from the norm and create unique and off-kilter soundscapes, I can't help but think a more, "one-for-me, one-for-you" approach would be better appreciated on a sophomore effort to follow. Every audiophile I play "Quarrel" for creams themselves listening to that track. The rest of the album we just can't play in the shop because it is a bit too esoteric for sound systems. I love it! But I do agree, while Quarrel begs to be played aloud, the rest is headphone music... and THATS COOL, but if a household name is to follow, you have to be a businessman as well as a creative. One for you, one for them. That's what I hope to see moving forward.

About Moses Sumney

Los Angeles singer/songwriter Moses Sumney first emerged in 2014, merging rich soul balladry with art-pop, folk, and ambient R&B. The San Bernardino native began playing out in his early twenties, quickly crafting a distinctive style that he augmented in the studio with lush multi-tracked vocal arrangements. His debut EP, 2014's Mid-City Island, yielded the dreamy single "Man on the Moon" and was followed in 2016 by the more acoustic-oriented singles "Seeds" and "Please." As his reputation grew, Sumney began to notch high-profile gigs opening for artists like Solange, James Blake, and David Byrne. In September 2017, Sumney delivered his debut full-length, Aromanticism, an artfully crafted meditation on lovelessness and solitude. ~ Timothy Monger
