In the late '80s, salsa slowed in productivity and sales to give way to the merengue craze that still reigns supreme for the conformist dancer. Nonetheless, the Fania label kept issuing great material and recordings, even when they were a bit lackadaisical in the promotion of these releases. The Master still kept Miranda's career afloat. "Así Es la Gente" and "Ayer" (written by the superb songwriter José Nogueras) were the better-known tunes. Puerto Rican Ismael Miranda became involved in popular music at a young age, participating in different local bands before teaming up with Andy Harlow. He debuted in 1967 with the release of an album recorded along with Joey Pastrana, featuring the hit "Rumbón Melon."
