Album Review

Buffalo, NY-based heavy metal quartet STEMM presents a generic representation of contemporary metal on its self-released album Blood Scent. Dan Nelligan's drumming shows a fondness for pummeling double-bass drums; Steve Crowl's bass throbs along; guitarist Alex Scouten strums typical metal riffs; and singer Joe "Jodah" Cafarella alternately howls and sings lyrics in a gruff voice with the usual imagery — fire, blood, weaponry — in the usual mood: rage. "As Real as It Gets" threads in President George W. Bush's remarks at Ground Zero ("I can hear you"), which suggests that the song is about a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, though the lyrics aren't that specific. A cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Wish" succeeds in demonstrating that Trent Reznor is a better songwriter than the members of STEMM, and prefaces the obligatory power ballad "Beneath My Skin" (which is repeated in an acoustic version as a hidden track after the closer, "Casualty for Prayer"). That's about as far as the band is willing to stray from the heavy metal formula, which means it may appeal to a core audience, especially fans recruited by concert appearances, but not beyond that.

Hometown Boys do it again...

Once again Stemm delivers a powerful in your face masterpiece. "Blood Soaked", sets the tone with its powerful riffs and killer drums. Their cover of NIN's "Wish", is enough to even make Mr. Reznor give it a listen. Finally "Casualty For Prayer", Leaves you wanting more. You won't be disappointed, these guys love music and we love their music. Keep up the good work guys. F#@k the Champion Of Life.

Stemm Does It AGAIN!!

This entire album is fantastic, with each track showing us, once again, how talented and original these guys are. If you've heard of them, heard them, or even seen the album once in a store, this is a must buy. The hidden song at the end is an acoustic beauty as well, and worth a second, third, or even fourth listen. Blood Scent is definitely not an album that will be out of your head quickly.

The whole CD is great starting off with "Blood Soaked". The lyrics on this cd are excellent and the music behind them makes you want to hear each song again. If "Beneath My Skin" doesn't become a minstream hit, there is something wrong with radio program directors. I am not a huge fan of other bands' covers but "Wish" is a pretty good cover and I have to admit I am a fan of it. If you like Shinedown, Seether, Hinder you will love this cd. I think they are harder but along the same lines. Get this now before they blow up big time. Check their myspace too for cool tees/hoodies.
