John Ringhofer (aka, Half-Handed Cloud) has been crafting homegrown, spiritually charged, lo-fi indie pop for nearly a decade now. A fan of brevity only in song length, the Sufjan Stevens protégé/former Danielson Famile bass player’s latest opus, As Stowaways in Cabinets of Surf, We Live-out in Our Members a Kind of Rebirth, doesn’t deviate from the childlike, overly complex, CCM pop that has become his forte over the years. Populated with 25 tracks festooned with puns and water metaphors, ASICOSWLOIOMAKOR (a mouthful, even in the form of an acronym) proves that Ringhofer can still kick out a solid pop song here and there, as evidenced by the jaunty (actually, they’re all pretty jaunty) “Fresh & Bitter from the Same Spring” and “Set Your Beams.”
