iTunes Review

Plainspoken Christian testimony and engaging folk-pop sounds make Ellie Holcomb’s debut album, As Sure as the Sun, a standout release. Known for her years of touring and recording with Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, this gifted singer/songwriter has earned kudos for her two solo EPs. Her first proper long-player is a work of understated but substantial charm, recalling Sara Groves’ homespun wisdom and Leslie (a.k.a. Sam) Phillips’ blend of intensity and innocence. Holcomb brings a confident sense of craft to the project. Whether she’s riding a buoyant, string-draped arrangement (“The Broken Beautiful”), wrapping herself in jangly guitar tones (“Love Broke Through”), or easing into a pedal steel-accented country ballad (“I Want to Be Free”), her feel for melodies and hooks is sure. As a singer, she projects both humility and strength as she delivers lyrics that reflect the real-life moments of loneliness and fear that afflict every believer. Tracks like “Night Song” and “The Valley” contrast moments of spiritual darkness with the light of salvation in simple yet poetic language. Holcomb doesn’t need overstatement to touch the heart.

This CD is a treasure, for a number of reasons. First, it is easy to listen to. It’s well produced (something you’d expect from Brown Bannister’s daughter!), sonically clear, and consistently “top drawer” in quality. No throwaways or second-rate tracks. No skipping to the next track. All good, substantive, listenable stuff. Second, the lyrics are both insightful and ultimately hopeful. They point the listener to the Lord and help us see and feel how Scripture really does speak to our struggles. Indeed, this work is a refreshing change from the depressing mentality of so much popular and folk music nowadays. Third, Ellie’s voice is nuanced and very distinctive, sort of not dissimilar to Leigh Nash of Sixpence None The Richer. In other words, she doesn’t sound like 1,001 other pop-folk female mass-produced singers. And, the way she sings adds a distinctive interpretive edge to each song. For example, the catch in her voice in a number of songs (“The Valley” would be an example) is both auditorially arresting and emotionally moving. On every song, actually, Ellie knocks it out of the park! The only “negative” (that’s not really a negative Per se) is, I would have loved for the CD to include 3-4 more songs. As it is, it just goes by sooo fast! But isn’t that the way it is with everything really good? Buy this CD, download it. Suport Ellie in whatever way you can. You will not be disappointed.

just wonderful, absolutely wonderful

OK…you got (to) me…

Stumbled upon this. Maybe you did, too. And maybe you think most Christian music is over-produced crap. Then you hear her voice. That slightly raspy, raw quality. As I sampled song after song, I felt like I was listening to a fresh voice in the CCM scene, and I hesitate to use that acronym. Anyway, bought the album, and love it.
