Album Review

Hershey, PA's the Ocean Blue are practically masters of sweet, gentle, vaguely British pop, combining sparkling, jangly guitars with crisp, sweet vocals and thoroughly melodic songwriting. Their self-titled debut lays down the blueprint for this sound, which remained largely unchanged through releases like Cerulean (which sported slightly dreamier production and songwriting) and Beneath the Rhythm & Sound (the band's most polished and pop-oriented effort), falling somewhere between the squeaky-clean pop of the Housemartins and the gorgeous melodic elements of the Cocteau Twins. While its songwriting occasionally falters, and it lacks the sonic cohesion of its two successors, The Ocean Blue delivers on what makes all of the band's work so appealing: simple, beautiful hooks and melodies.

Epic classic alternative from PA

Years ago I was graced to have the opportunity to see the ocean blue in concert in Norfolk VA the boathouse one of the best venues I've ever been to. The boathouse was the typical beer soaked open pit general standing but one of a kind awesome place. I can still feel the vibe the place got when the ocean blue played between something and nothing the place just went wild omg they til this day are my favorite band, have made it a point to buy every album they have released. Long live the ocean blue. Give these guys a listen to I compare them to the connells from the carolinas and even a touch of early inxs.

Blown Away

I walked into a small independent record store back in '89( remember small record stores?). The owner would talk to customers and recommend artists . He recommended this cd and band to me. Never heard of them. Playing this cd from start to finish was a revelation for me. It blew me away. I guess DRIFTING, FALLING is my favorite track, but I love them all. Many critics like Cerulean better but although I love all their material, this is the best-to me!

Must have late 80's synth rock!!!

This is a great band you've never heard of. Mercury was the radio hit I found them with. But this band gets a sound I've never heard another achieve. All the instruments are recorded very clean, theres not a lot of distortion on this CD, instead you get clean rythms, and keys, with clean vocal hooks and dreamy progressions. Great Band !!!! You Should hear this !!!!!!
