Customer Reviews

I've been streaming this on their site, can't wait to get a lossless version of this somewhere. It's experimental and hard hitting, just the way I like it. Fantastic work from a fantastic band.

Years Later

Good things are worth waiting for and the initail track does not dissapoint. Different, but still retains all of the things that make Karnivool great. 5 stars based on 1 song and the fact that even if the album isn't as good as "Sound Awake", it will still be better than 99% of the junk that passes as rock music today. EDIT: After getting the whole album, quick notes; way less commercial than previous albums, while avoiding the possible pitfall of doing a Sound Awake 2 clone, they go a different direction. Not an easy listen, i like it, but predict mixed reviews and some complaining about the lack of precieved direction and melody in some tracks.

Not Sound Awake II

I will first admit that I am still digesting this album. My main complaint up to this point is the mixing/production. Compared to "Sound Awake", the depth of tone and mood is just not there, especially with the drums. Maybe it was planned to do a more raw sounding album but I don't think it comes across as well since their songs demand quality production. The really dense songs like "Nachash" and "The Refusal" have a lot going on in them and it kind of gets garbled in my opinion. It can come off as sloppy though I really don't think it is. There are some thin and papery tones throughout which make you wonder if you are listening to a really low bit rate file. I am not a sound engineer so I can't really state anything further than my opinion.

The music itself is very interesting and different for the most part. I feel they experimented more; sometimes succeeding and sometimes not so much. They are amazing at developing songs to their fullest but I feel that they fell short on a couple of occassions. I am not one the guys who is usually asking for longer songs but I feel they left some tracks under-developed.

I feel that the theme of this album is the lack of a theme so to speak. I haven't analyzed the lyrics yet but just the range in music definitely gives the album an asymmetrical feel.

I am not meaning to be critical. Karnivool is one of my favorite bands and I cannot imagine disliking anything they put out. This album is probably better than 95% of the music out there. I am glad they keep progressing and are not trying to make the same album again. I was expecting something between this and "Sound Awake" but I think that was foolish. "We Are" may be the only track that sounds like it could be from "Sound Awake".

Overall I would give this 4 stars for Karnivool standards and 5 stars compared to the majority of music.

Formed: 1997 in Perth, Australia

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Karnivool started out as a high school band in 1997, playing parties around Perth focusing on covers of Nirvana and Carcass with a handful of original songs thrown into the mix. After a year of this, singer Ian Kenny decided to change the focus to purely original material, getting rid of the original bandmembers -- who had been called "a bunch of clowns" around Perth, hence the name Karnivool -- and recruiting guitarists Drew Goddard and Mark Hosking, bass player Jon Stockman, and drummer Ray Hawking...
