Album Review

On the EPs leading up to this, their debut album At Home, the Greek duo Keep Shelly in Athens built a sound out of cast-off parts from electronic eras gone by. The Orb's dubby ambience, the slinking beats and blue atmospheres of trip-hop, lushly sculptured synths taken from an Enya deep cut...these were the building blocks to which the mysterious duo added soaring female vocals and came up with something both quite familiar but somehow new. The duo kept all these elements, adding a few welcome additions (sparkly Cocteau Twins-y grandeur, more fleshed-out songs) and a few they should have a taken a pass on (the unfortunate flashes of dubstep, some over the top vocal emoting). The result is an album that sounds good when the pieces fit together well, like on the loping "Recollection" or "Flyway," where vocalist Sarah P sounds like an elfin Beth Gibbons singing over a lost Cybotron beat.

Finally!

I've been waiting for a full length album from KSIA for a while now. "Cremona Memories" and Rogue Superhero have been on constant rotation in my library for some time. They have this way of stretching a sort of dreamy-yet-head-bobbing melodic quality across their songs that is paired very well with the inflections of the singers lovely voice (she does truly outstanding vocals on MMOTHS "Heart" as well). Sometimes uplifting, sometimes foreboding, but almost always interesting. Missed them last time they came to town, so I'm looking forward to seeing them live in a couple of weeks. Highly recommended!

Please don't keep shelly in athens!

Terrific album... and so good see KSIA catalog available on iTunes! I can't recommend this album enough... my personal fav: Oostende... awesome tidal wave of electronics and great vocals.

With an air of mystique, Athens, Greece-based Keep Shelly in Athens combine ambient bedroom electro-pop, chillwave, and Ibiza house music influences to create a uniquely somber take on disco. In 2010, the boy/girl (presumably) duo released its debut EP, In Love with Dusk, and it became a blog hit. In 2011, Forest Family, the label run by Gorilla vs. Bear and Weekly Tape Deck,...
