iTunes Editors’ Notes

Jamesetta Hawkins was known as a raw, bawdy vocalist when this session with strings, a rarity for R&B at the time, allowed James to realize her full emotional and physical range as a singer. She was struggling to find a way back to the charts five years after her 1955 smash debut "Dance With Me Henry" when she cut "At Last" perhaps the most sublime performance of a love song ever recorded. Caressed by violins, James' voice purrs, sighs, and lightly growls with the pleasures of newfound romance. "A Sunday Kind of Love" and "All I Could Do Was Cry" capture a similar Žlan. This edition adds a bonus track, "Spoonful" to another Willie Dixon tune, "I Just Want to Make Love to You," which give the sassy, brassy side of James's voice room to romp.

Getta This Etta

Okay - A bit hokey, I know, but hey. Give me a break. It's Etta!! Her first BEST songs and this encompasses so much of who she still is. The ballsy blues woman and the songs that brought her to our attention so long ago.... Remember??? Keep her in your heart....

This album is absolutely amazing!

I came across this album while looking for the song "A Sunday Kind of Love" (IMO one the greatest soul recordings ever). Bought the whole album due to the amazingly low $5.99 price tag. This woman has a voice that will put you at ease and then suddenly send a chill up and down your spine when she hits some of those raspy, low, powerful notes. I can't stop listening to this one!! Do yourself a favor and buy the entire album. It's a good place to start if you're just starting to discover who she is and it carries all of the lush orchestrations/50's slow dance hall sound that she became known for. A+++

I'm in love with Etta James

I stumbled across the featured song: "At Last" - so I bought it. Then I clicked on "Stormy Weather" and liked it so much that I bought that one too. When I previewed "A Sunday Kind of Love" . . . that was all I needed to decide to purchase the entire album. (I was actually shocked to see the price!) Her voice is clear, and enchanting. An artist who can communicate so much feeling and emotion will always have a place on my iPod and in my heart. (Now I have to find a way to tell my wife that I have another woman in my life. lol)

Few female R&B stars enjoyed the kind of consistent acclaim Etta James received throughout a career that spanned six decades; the celebrated producer Jerry Wexler once called her "the greatest of all modern blues singers," and she recorded a number of enduring hits, including "At Last," "Tell Mama," "I'd Rather Go Blind," and "All I Could Do Was Cry." At the same time, despite possessing one of the most powerful voices in music, James only belatedly gained the attention of the mainstream audience,...
