A Brief History of Love (Bonus Track Version)

The Big Pink, a British duo consisting of Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell, unleash a big noise on their debut, A Brief History of Love. Their retro shoegazer sound updates the approach of bands like the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine while adding some tough hooks and marvelously murky production. The album was largely self-produced and these guys clearly know what they’re doing because they make the loud, distorted guitars, electronic drones, synth loops, and assorted psychedelic fringes all sound surprisingly rich and warm. Squalls of industrial noise lend “Crystal Visions” an eerie edge, the undeniably catchy “Dominos” sports an immediately memorable chorus, and “Velvet” rides an addictive pulsating beat. They also slow things down on “Love In Vain” and the title track without losing too much momentum. True to the title, love and lust are the dominant lyrical themes with perspectives ranging from cynical and removed to vulnerable and confused. Expansive and exciting, A Brief History of Love is an impressive first effort.
