Beyond expectations

Pirate Hip-Hop, at first, does sound pretty cheesy. And with the popularity of pirates today, thanks to movies and popular culture, it would seem destined that someone would come along and attempt a pirate hip-hop album. Thank goodness that person was Captain Dan, and his scurvy crew. While it would be easy for some artists to write easy rhymes, along the lines of "we sail by the whale/we can tell by its tail," Captain Dan does something unexpected - he takes the essence of piratical behavior in the 16th and 17th century, and transposes it onto modern music. Pirates were bad guys, and a lot of "pirate fans" seem to forget that. They broke the law. They killed without mercy, and stole from whomever, whenever. Pirates, were, in effect the first western hemisphere "Gangsters," and because of that, this album works. Most of the rhymes are well executed, and the beats are well done and catchy. I have listened to some pirate rock, and it doesn't work. I think by blending the attitude of old-time pirates with the sensibilites of modern gangsters (women, weed, and weapons), and doing that blending in the context of hip-hop makes this album succeed where lesser artists would have failed. What could be better? Well, from early tracks, probably their follow-up album!

This goon can groove

A lot of pirate gimmicks are just that – gimmicks. Captain Dan has some quality behind the beat which makes this album a worthy purchase. He stays in character for all the songs, without making the rap feel out of place. There are no filler songs - they are all enjoyable. If you only purchase one pirate rap album this year, “Authentic Pirate Hip Hop” should be it.

Yar! Plunder this album immediately! It be worth yer booty! Now back to English- this is a very interesting album, to say the least. Hip-hop? I've never been a fan of. But with pirates injected into it, it does sound tolerable. In fact, it sounds good. Great. Amazing. Five stars!
