Moorish Highway

Moorish Highway

Trummors, the bewitching folk-rock duo of Anne Cunningham and David Lerner, relocated from Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood to Woodstock, N.Y., where the upstate locale better suits their musical souls. The move makes terrific sense considering their music's meditative and mellow elements, largely dependent on Cunningham’s vocals and the duo’s gorgeous harmonies. Yet there’s a youthful, ’60s-styled pop influence driving the 12-string–based “Strangers from Now On” for a bump in tempo, while their cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain” is so perfectly suited to their vocals that it’s no wonder it’s become a live staple. For Moorish Highway, the duo invited a smart group of backing musicians, including drummer Otto Hauser (Vetiver), guitarist Kevin Barker (Joanna Newsom), bassist James Preston (Zachary Cale), and pedal steel guitarist Marc Orleans, who completes the country feel of “Branches Divide.” With a perfect lineup of songs, the duo clearly beat the sophomore slump with a second album that fulfills the promise of their early work, and that points to a future with great potential.
