It’s Donald Glover’s eye-popping soul riot. And like everything he's touched in 2016, his third Childish Gambino album is a slow-burning triumph. The robust hip-hop of previous records is parked and in its place arrives sweltering soul and mussed-up funk. Opener “Me and Your Mama” is a deep, exultant opus that makes plain Glover’s ambition, the exquisite “Redbone” sees him access a register (and vibe) that Prince would approve, while “California”—a sort of breezy calypso jam with a judicious use of wood whistle—captures the effervescent and completely intoxicating spirit of a very special record.

DONALD IS A GENIUS

Donald Glover is truly a mastermind and way ahead of his time. Everything he creates is pure classic and out of this world, literally from a different time. "Awaken, My Love!" Is going to be a game changer for music in general. I had the opportunity to listen to it at his Pharos event and it changed my life. This man has God-like talent. It's time the whole world realizes this.

Funkadelic

As someone who went to the Pharos concert, I can confirm that the single "Me and Your Mama", as well as the entire album, is funky as hell. A really radical change for Gambino, but a really fantastic one too. I can promise this album will be excellent, and if you're a fan of R&B, or funk/jazz, you will absolutely love this album.
