iTunes Review

It’s Donald Glover’s eye-popping soul riot. And like everything he's touched in 2016, his third Childish Gambino album is a slow-burning triumph. The robust hip-hop of previous records is parked and in its place arrives sweltering soul and mussed-up funk. Opener “Me and Your Mama” is a deep, exultant opus that makes plain Glover’s ambition, the exquisite “Redbone” sees him access a register (and vibe) that Prince would approve, while “California”—a sort of breezy calypso jam with a judicious use of wood whistle—captures the effervescent and completely intoxicating spirit of a very special record.

This is just an amazing album. I love that he tried something new, and even better, he pulled it off. It is such a feel-good album. It may sound weird at first, especially with the different voices (I'm looking at you, "Zombies" and "California"), but after the second or third listen, it just clicks and you get into it. At least that's what happened with me. I haven't stopped listening since it came out. From the rock and soul elements with "Me and Your Mama," to the relaxing funk and R&B elements of "Baby Boy," this a timeless, beautiful album. The only problems that I have with the album are the way the songs don't necessarily flow together well, if you listen to the album in order. In "Because the Internet," the songs flowed really well together, even with the mixing of genres. It just seems kind of weird to be listening to the calming ending of "Me and Your Mama," and then out of nowhere, to be listening to a folky, funky, soul song that is "Have Some Love." I also think the album is a little short, but that's me being greedy. Other than that, the album is lovely and just mesmerizing.

Favorite Songs (Basically the whole album):
"Me and Your Mama"
"Stand Tall"

Least Favorite (I still like them and think they are good songs, but compared to the rest of the album, they are not as good):
"Have Some Love"

Sad :(

I only like two songs from this album. I really tried to get into it but I couldn't. I have loved Gambino (even his pre Camp music too) but this surprised me. I was really loving forward to his rapping or singing that I love. I think it's awesome that he decided to try something new but I really was disappointed when I listened to the album.

Eclectic Funkadelic 🔥🔥🔥

Love it!!!

Whether doing standup, acting on TV and in movies, or performing his off-kilter hip-hop and funk under the name Childish Gambino, it's impossible not to be impressed by Donald Glover's talents. He got his start performing with the sketch group Derrick Comedy, which led to him being hired by Tina Fey in 2006 to write for 30 Rock. Three years later he left that job to move to Los Angeles and was soon cast on the sitcom Community. He had released his first mixtape, Sick Boi, the previous year, using...
