iTunes Review

This young soprano proves her interest in the core repertoire by turning in committed performances of Rachmaninov’s “Vocalise” and Caccini’s “Ave Maria.” But like her equally innovative peers in the classical crossover scene, Evancho reaches far and wide to find ways to connect with audiences: She gives us a solemn rendition of “The Rains of Castamere” (famous from HBO’s Game of Thrones), as well as winning versions of familiar tunes from the likes of U2 (“With or Without You”) and Ennio Morricone (“Your Love”).

So Far, So Good

Even though the full album has not been released, Ms. Evancho is definitely working on creating a beautiful tone for her voice. From the opening sample of “Think of Me,” I’m confident saying that this could be a breakthrough album for her. Her rendition of the highlight aria from “Phantom” is brilliant, and showcases her depth and range, granted that the clip only showcases the middle section of the song. Many who know the song will await to hear the light, airy, staccato segment of the piece before the grand finale. Ms. Evancho’s smooth, effortless quality has definitely been sharpened, and helped her voice grow into something that I feared would be too young and popularized. I was not a huge fan of her first album, having listened to it, and it seeming forced and rushed for the classics. In her cover of “The Rains of Castamere,” we hear a darker, ghostly quality of her voice, which provides even more depth to her voice, and what future works lie ahead of her. I see Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise Op. 34” is in the line up, which is a huge song. Having heard other versions of this aforementioned piece, I have good faith that Jackie has the depth and appropriate range for the song, to help pull it off successfully. I hope the rest of her upcoming album is as good as the first two clips of “Think of Me” and “Rains of Castamere” have been.

A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, Evancho (who also plays violin and piano) began taking vocal lessons in 2008 at the age of eight. By 2010, she had already breezed through a local singing contest; started her own YouTube channel; released...
