A musical double shot of Rio de Janeiro and NYC culture

Valentina D.

This album takes you on an incredible musical journey through Brazilian rhythms and styles. There is a boldness, joy, and beauty in the songs that is emblematic of the culture. The iconic percussion instruments and infectious melody on tracks like Meu Rio, a samba, and De Volta ao Brasil, a forro, will make you dance! Itaiguara’s take on traditional styles like samba, bossa nova, and forro is fresh, as he brings classical and jazz elements into these original compositions. The one track that is not an original (O Voo da Mosca/Flight of the Fly) is a challenging, fast-paced number that demonstrates some serious chops on the bass and electric guitar. The title track, Awakening, is a wistful masterpiece; it may make you weepy but will leave you with hope. And the instrumentation (10-piece chamber orchestra) is beautifully layered. I love this album!
