iTunes Review

If you feel a sense of sonic déjà vu after hitting play on Dave Matthews Band’s seventh studio album, that could very well be because they reunited with Steve Lillywhite, the man who produced their first three albums. And should further familiarity resonate, that’s because Matthews and company have been test-driving the songs "If Only," "Gaucho," "Sweet" and standout ballad "Mercy" live in concerts, prior to tracking them for Away From The World. Aside from second song “Belly Belly Nice” recalling the propulsive funk of “Ants Marching,” “Broken Things” opens to reveal that this is hardly a 1990s throwback album or nostalgic trip. Sure, those old tones fit the band like a worn-in pair of jeans, but the arrangements here are more complex — and yet the guys play them with an impressive contrast of soulful ease and dexterous musicianship. When matched with vintage tube-amps, grinding Hammond organ and a subtly mixed-in horn section the slow burning soul groove of “If Only” stands out like a Memphis barbecue in Virginia.

Away from the World

Great album. If only is a great song. The collections of songs will remind you of the first three albums. Purchasing the whole album is a smart move. Well worth the investment. There really isn't a bad song. Good to have the old DMB back.

Better than last few albums

Not sure why so many 5 star reviews. DMB is my favorite band of all time but have been disappointed by the progression of their sound. I do like the less commercial sound this time around, but I just can't listen to the album without cringing a little. Much love to DMB though

Just fantastic

Best album they've had in years. I downloaded If Only from a freebie I had and it was so good I had to check the rest of the album out. They never disappoint!

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Formed in the early '90s by South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews, the Dave Matthews Band presented a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with elements of jazz, funk, and the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Matthews populated the group with several Virginia-based musicians -- bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist Leroi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and short-lived keyboardist Peter Griesar -- and the band built up a strong word-of-mouth...
