Album Review

One classic single—the title track—and lots of filler, performed competently but without distinction. By astutely casting the group in a updated doowop style that emphasized their complex close harmonies, Marvin Gaye's guidance gave the group the distinctive personality that it previously lacked as well as the commercial success that they so richly deserved. After years of singing in the background, they stepped into the spotlight, and it was worth it the effort.

The 1969 album, NOT the 1981 album

Don't let the data or review above fool ya. This is the ORIGINAL Originals album from '69 on Motown. The 1981 album of this name consisted of re-recordings of the title song and Please Mr. Postman (written by group leader Eddie Gorman) among others. Marvin Gaye pens a few songs here, but his influence on the group is just starting at this point. For the best overview of this great unsung group, go for The Very Best of The Originals. Some of the songs here are fine to explore for more depth but it's not all choice material (Red Sails in the Sunset, indeed!)

The Originals were led by singer Freddie Gorman, a Detroit native who in 1957 formed the Fideletones with longtime friend Brian Holland. After issuing "Pretty Girl" on Aladdin Records in 1959,...
