iTunes Editors’ Notes

While The Ramones are the quintessential New York City rock 'n' roll band, The Dictators could've had that title had fate gone their way. Viva Dictators! is a live album recorded in NYC at a few shows in support of their excellent 2001 album D.F.F.D.—their first in 23 years. The band shows zero rust. In fact, Handsome Dick Manitoba is arguably a better singer and frontman than he was in the band's prime. D.F.F.D. added to The Dictators' arsenal of powerful rockers with such standouts as "Who Will Save Rock and Roll?," "Pussy and Money," and "Avenue A." Considering The Dictators were always at their best live—absorbing the audience's energy at every turn—a concert album is the way to best experience their power and poignancy. Classic Dictators tunes like "The Next Big Thing," "Master Race Rock," "Baby, Let's Twist," and "(I Live For) Cars and Girls" show off their abundance of humor, outrage, and proto-punk energy without falling comfortably into any genre.
