Pure Genius!

Milstein's reading of the Bach Sonatas & Partitas is truly brilliant--a yardstick by which all others may be measured. If only one, make it this one!

Nathan Milstein - solo Bach for violin

This, despite the demurral of some critics, surely is the definitive recording of these works. Milstein brings to these performances not only the technical deftness with which he is deservedly associated, but the profundity of an artist who realizes he is making his final statement regarding a masterpiece with which he has spent a lifetime. As a result, there is a kind of sublimity to his work in this rendition. The Chaconne of the 2nd Partita is worth the price of the album. However, Milstein puts that piece in context in such a way that the entire set becomes a complete entity where any omission detracts from the whole. It just doesn't ever get better than this.

The best interpretation of Bach

Nathan Milstein is without contest one of the rare violinists able to convey Bach's unique sense of melody. Sober interpretation, as always, powerful sound, without excessive pathos or inappropriate vibratos (a pervasive tendency in the community of classical violinists). Milstein, as always, focuses here on the flow, and delivers the most sublime version of these masterpieces. The maestro dissolves his own ego in these masterwork - if we start listening to the music, we forget about the artist, about the notes, and then emerges a landscape of pure beauty.

His teacher was Pyotr Stolyarsky, remaining with him through 1941. At his last recital as a Stolyarsky pupil, another student on the stage was the five-year-old David Oistrakh. Milstein went to Petrograd to study with Leopold Auer at the conservatory...
