State of the Art

This is the complete version, for those who demand the entire work that Bach released. This performance meets the criterion of current musicology concerning the nature and performance of Baroque instruments, as well as the performance style of the chorale and vocal soloists. It is probably performed as well or better than it was ever performed in Bach's time, due to the advantage of electronics to promote perfect balance between vocalists and instrumentalists. The recitatif is superbly handled, lending new meaning to an old story. If one does not understand German, one will need to obtain a copy of the text to appreciate it most fully. Try some of the commentaries for not only the text, but some enriching comments on Bach's rich tonal symbolism as well.

St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244

The soloists have sweet voices, the recitations are clear and distinct, the chorales well balanced. Proper sacred music well-suited to the Easter season that I purchased it for. Being new to the field I was glad to find a translation elsewhere on the web with notes that explained the various components, and I am thrilled to recognize the theme from a long-time favorite hymn. Because the music is simply elegant, I shall enjoy relaxing with it for other seasons of the year as well as Easter and for many years to come.

Founded by John Eliot Gardiner, the group regularly performs throughout England and Europe. It has given a number of concerts in two London halls, the Barbican and St. John's Smith Square. The English Baroque Soloists drew many of their original members...
