About Benjamin Appl & Concerto Köln

German baritone Benjamin Appl began his career as a chorister in the Regensburg Cathedral Choir, and continued his studies at the College for Music and Theater in Munich. He also studied with Edith Wiens and Rudolf Piernay at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has appeared in many operatic productions, including Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Britten's Owen Wingrave, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, Puccini's La bohème, and Eötvös' Tri Sestri. Appl has performed with leading conductors, including Edward Gardner, Marin Alsop, Paul McCreesh, Roger Norrington, Helmuth Rilling, and others, and appeared with the Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin, the Stuttgart Bach Collegium, the Gabrieli Players and Consort, Les Violons du Roy, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, among other ensembles. He has given vocal recitals with Graham Johnson, Helmut Deutsch, Malcolm Martineau, James Baillieu, and Martin Stadtfeld, and performed at Wigmore Hall and the Schubertiade Music Festival in Hohenems and Schwarzenberg, as well as at many other international festivals. He has recorded for Champs Hill Records, Wigmore Hall Live, and Sony Classical. ~ Blair Sanderson
