iTunes Review

The fourth and final studio album Dokken recorded during its ‘80's heyday is undeniably the band’s finest hour. The album draws its power from the chemistry between guitarist George Lynch and singer Don Dokken. With his majestic tenor, Dokken was always vying for control of the band against the devastating prowess of Lynch. “Dream Warriors,” “Burning Like a Flame” and “Kiss of Death” unite their dueling powers in the name of hard rock ecstasy. Rather than just churn out the same fluffy pop metal as their peers, Dokken’s music was a mix of high drama, virtuosity and heavy rock. While most of the era’s bands took their cues from Cheap Trick and Aerosmith, Back for the Attack looks to older European groups like Scorpions and Rainbow. Sure, the power ballad “Heaven Sent” and the stadium anthems “Prisoner” and “So Many Tears” were built for radio play, but Dokken was never as vapid as their Sunset Strip peers. Part of that depth comes from Lynch’s innovative guitar work. For proof of why he is still revered by guitar nerds, just check the molten instrumental “Mr. Scary.”

Back for the Attack

This is probably my favorite by Dokken I can still remember playing this over and over. With such classics like Burning Like a Flame, Heaven Sent, Night By Night and the Nightmare On Elm Steet hit Dream Warriors.

Excellent Dokken Album

There are so many tracks that shine on Back for the Attack. Guitarist George Lynch had been well-respected before this album, but the track Mr. Scary single-handedly put him in the stratosphere of other guitar greats of the era. From the opening riffs to the final screaming notes, this instrumental slams you through the wall and into the neighbor's yard. Dream Warriors is a well-known standout, having also been the theme song for Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Night by Night, Standing in the Shadows, Heaven Sent, Burning Like a Flame (a minor hit single), Sleepless Night, and Cry of the Gypsy are all great songs that can be listened to over and over. Prisoner and Lost Behind the Wall are solid songs, but not particularly memorable. Dokken would been wise to make this a 11-track album and cut filler songs like So Many Tears and Stop Fighting Love. But in the final analysis, this was Dokken's seminal album form the George Lynch Era and worth a spin in the iPod!

George Freakin Lynch

One of Dokken's best, Lynch shines on Kiss of Death and Mr. Scary..The album in its totality is good helping close the door on glam rock's prime..Of course with all of Dokken's albums and like many other 80s rockers, the balladish material is also there with Stop Fighting Love And Heaven Sent..But the album is more for me a Lynch masterpiece, even though Don Dokken's vocals still are great backed by the Jeff Pilson Harmonies..

At a time when the charts were ruled by pop-metal acts, Dokken was a major attraction throughout the 1980s. With vocalist Don Dokken's captivating stage presence and guitarist George Lynch's high-energy style, the band combined rockers such as "Kiss of Death" and power ballads such as "Alone Again" in order to create a number of best-selling albums. Dokken's roots date back to the late '70s, when Lynch, along with drummer Mick Brown, teamed up with Don Dokken to form the Boyz. In 1981, Don moved...
