Album Review

The third studio long player from the quirky, Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey-based indie rockers, the Fueled by Ramen-issued Back on Top finds the Front Bottoms making the jump to a major label without losing any authenticity in process. Obstinate, fun, melodious, awkward, inventive, rude, and occasionally enlightening, Back on Top offers up another spirited set of good time folk-punk that's as hook-filled and hilarious as it is filthy. The 11-track set includes the singles "Summer Shandy" and "Help," as well longtime live staple and fan favorite β€œThe Plan (F**k Jobs)."

What happened to the band?

TFB was a band known for their originality. Their lower instrumentals and vocal made them unique, and it made them good. They had good relatable lyrics and their songs made sense. With this album, they threw everything that made them good and unique away. They upped their vocal quality and made instrumentals a major part of their music, which isn't what they were about, and while it seems like it should be the other way around, it dropped the quality. Once they signed their new record label, they went downhill fast.

New Is Not Better

West Virginia and Cough It Out, which came out earlier this year, really were leading me to believe that this album could be great. But now that my preorder has come in, I'm disappointed. Twin Size Mattress and Funny You Should Ask were songs I played on repeat for hours last winter. Now? These newest songs are full of cursing and metaphors that are too hard to follow. The desperate, whiny, and even comically sad lyrics is what I so well related to. But "Back On Top" is like listening to a completely different language. I miss the Front Bottoms I fell in love with.
