Album Review

After spending years pursuing a mainstream pop career, Olivia Newton-John returned to Nashville in the late '90s to record Back with a Heart. By that time, of course, the boundaries between Nashville and adult contemporary pop had been blurred beyond belief, so it was no great stretch for her to tackle contemporary country. Nevertheless, Newton-John quite obviously put a great deal of effort into the making of Back with a Heart — the record is her best in years. It's much slicker than even her polished country-pop from the '70s, but a team of producers — Don Cook, John Farrar, Gary Burr, Tony Brown, Chris Farren and David Foster — have created an appealingly smooth sound that gives her a platform to showcase her mature craftsmanship. None of the songs immediately stand out, but the album has a consistent quality that is thoroughly winning.

Should have been her return to the spotlight

This is a much under-appreciated album for Olivia. This album has such lush arrangement and really shows off her vocal range! And her voice is better than ever, with a deeper richer sound and strength. "Love is a Gift" is the perfect new wedding song, and the title track, as well as "Attention" are the perfect yin and yang songs for any broken heart. The biggest marketing mistake was releasing I Honestly Love You '98 as the first single. Though the song is a wonderful update of her signature song, it was the wrong choice to attract new fans. Left listeners wanting the 80's Olivia "back."

This is one of those albums by a beloved artist you want to like so badly. It sounds pretty good at first listen, and then a few weeks or months later you realize you haven't played it at all since you bought it. Olivia's new-agey previous album, GAIA (with all songs completely self-written) was much better, though initially only available in the U.S. as an import.

Love this!

This album is a must for Olivia fans! I love track 7, 5, and 10! Just a
great country album overall!

Olivia Newton-John skillfully made the transition from popular country-pop singer to popular mainstream soft rock singer, becoming one of the most successful vocalists of the '70s in the process. The transition itself wasn't much of a stretch -- her early-'70s hits "I Honestly Love You" and "Have You Never Been Mellow" were country only in the loosest sense -- yet the extent of her success in both fields was remarkable. As a country singer, her first five charting singles all went Top Ten in the...
