Album Review

Shine is a retitled, relaunched version of Meredith Brooks' 2002 album Bad Bad One. That record made little impression upon its May release that year, apart from the single "Shine" sneaking onto the lower reaches of the Adult Top 40 charts, and the album sat dormant for nearly two years, when, out of nowhere, the popular television therapist Dr. Phil adopted the song as his new theme song for his new fall season. So, Bad Bad One was re-released on Kissing Booth/SLG under the new title Shine. The title was moved to the pole position and the rest of the album was shuffled around, with the new "Dr. Phil Remix" — which is not only a remix, but an edit, clocking in at well under two minutes — added to the end of the record. For listeners who were won over to Brooks through the Dr. Phil show, this is clearly the way to go, but anybody who already owns Bad Bad One will find this superfluous.

Bad Bad One is all Good

This album is highly recommended, for its great hooks and positive attitude. Check out the standout track on the album "You Don't Know Me" in addition to "Pleasure" "Pain" and "Crazy" (from the What a Girl Wants soundtrack).

What is wrong with people?

A little different sounding from 'Bluring The Edges' but hello this is 04 that was 97 music changes. GET OVER IT and realize this is a good CD. Bluring is better yes but 'Shine' is an amazing song and CD. Have an open mind.

Meredith Brooks is one of the legions of female singer-songwriters that emerged in the wake of alternative rockers like Liz Phair and PJ Harvey. Brooks has more in common with rootsier songwriters like Sheryl Crow or pop-rockers like Alanis Morrissette, which was evident from her first single, "Bitch." Essentially a replication of Morrissette's style, "Bitch" became a hit in the spring of 1997, sending her debut album Blurring the Edges into the charts as well. Ironically, Brooks' music and background...
