iTunes Review

Three hip-hop greats come together for this easygoing ode to Southern California living. MED and Blu are the hosts, spitting slang-filled rhymes about life on the West Coast. Meanwhile, Madlib offers a platter of head-nod beats, like the percussion-slapping rhythm of “Get Money” and the hydraulic-powered disco-funk of “The Strip,” that keeps this backyard jam poppin’. The trio encourages an open-door policy, too, with The Foreign Exchange’s Phonte Coleman dropping a verse on “Finer Things” and Mayer Hawthorne crooning over disco lounge beats on “The Buzz.”

MED, Blu and Madlib are a debonair version of the Lootpack in 'Bad Neighbor'

It may not have sunk in yet, but Madlib is simply the king of experimental, underground beat-making in the West. He is to alternative hip-hop production in Cali what Dr. Dre is to mainstream rap production in the same state. Known for his lengthy production discography, his many collaborations and emcee work as Quasimoto, the Oxnard, CA native has tapped (and taped) Stones Throw rapper MED (also an Oxnard native) and L.A. emcee Blu for the Bad Neighbor LP (Oct. 30). This super stylish trio combine Madlib's sample-driven, eclectic soul arrangements with silky smooth lyrics by the cool street cats in MED and Blu for swagger by the pound and tantalizing background music.

As was already said, MED and Blu are mainly groovy street dudes from around the way, giving the hip-hop fiends exactly what they want ("Serving"). They serve up great rhyme setups blinging and balling in "Get Money" and try out their playalistic skills in "The Stroll" but cast out demanding, high maintenance females in "Finer Things." These fellas are in-fashion and jazzy, but their rhyme skills are intellectually refined and fill the air casually and with style and finesse. As professional with the mic as can be, the two dynamic rhymers are live, confident and cool to the max, but they would not have went anywhere without Madlib's amazing production.

Rich beats with wonderful sample material can be found in every track, and Madlib applies his golden touch in many other ways, from the robotic, industrial sounds in "Peroxide" to the in and out radio frequencies in "The Stroll" to the warm retro club vibes in "The Strip." The album would be overstaffed, but the fine guests (like Hodgy Beats, MF Doom and Anderson Paak to name a few) blend in so well that they don't take away from the album's main flavors. The beautiful result of excellent technique, this Bad Neighbor album has tons of replay value because of its infectious tunes and their ability to grow on listeners. In fact, the threesome should maybe call themselves Bad Neighbor as a group from now on based off its success. Madlib has brought out the very best in his guys, and a lot of people will be wishing for a sophomore.

Biography

Born: Oxnard, CA

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Growing up in Oxnard, California with many other artists who ended up on the Stones Throw label, Nick Rodriguez, aka Medaphoar (and later, MED), grew up in a musical family, and by age nine he was freestyling to entertain his parents. By junior high he was writing his own rhymes, and by high school he was something of a local celebrity. Looking for beats one day, Medaphoar went to the house of Otis Jackson Jr., or Madlib, who was impressed by the MC's skills and invited him into his crew, Lootpack,...
