EDITORS’ NOTES

Bad Witch was first envisioned as the final installment in an EP trilogy, following 2016’s Not the Actual Events and 2017’s Add Violence. But, wary of falling into patterns of musical predictability, Trent Reznor scrapped the concept, and instead released the project as NIN’s ninth, and shortest, full album. It feels like pure experimentation—a direct rebuttal to that sameness he was worried about. It alternates between anxious beats, jarring vocals (“Ahead of Ourselves”), and intriguing ambience (“I’m Not from This World”), clearly influenced by Reznor’s masterful score compositions for films including The Social Network and Gone Girl.

Not good

The best of this single sounds like a cheap Radiohead knockoff with Trent’s vocals being far inferior to Thom Yorke. NIN hasn’t made anything decent since With Teeth. I’ll pass.

Trying to channel David Bowie?

His last few releases have been disappointing, and this new single seems to be heading down that road. He's a family man now and his music seems to have lost that angry edge that I really liked about it ... Too bad .

Another disappointment

Everytime I see a new NIN song I am oh so hopeful that Trent has gotten back to his roots and put out someting that is classic NIN - not this new age crap that he keeps churning out (for the last 5 albums). I think its at the point now that there is no turning back and I will cease to even tease myself by previewing the new stuff - I'll just have to curl up with my PHM, Broken, Spiral and Fragile CD's and be satisfied.

About Nine Inch Nails

With shadowy beauty and searing intensity, Nine Inch Nails—the long-running project of multi-instrumentalist/producer/songwriter Trent Reznor—expanded the scope of mainstream music. Scrutinizing humanity, relationships, and society, Reznor shapes deeply internalized thoughts into accessible, exciting sound. 1989’s Pretty Hate Machine brought this introspective curiosity and synth-heavy industrial rock to a broad audience, while landmark releases The Downward Spiral and The Fragile stunned with coarse guitars and striking ferocity. Nine Inch Nails is continuously evolving—experimenting with new formats and ideas, including the turbulent 2007 concept album Year Zero, about a dystopian futuristic USA, and the textured minimalism of 2013’s Hesitation Marks. Unbounded by convention, Reznor has upended relationships with labels in order to safeguard his artistic freedom and forged creative alliances with outsider champions like David Bowie, Saul Williams, and David Lynch, while longtime collaborator Atticus Ross became the only other official member of Nine Inch Nails in 2016.
