Album Review

Very much in the vein of the Darkness, Jet, and Wolfmother, the International Playboys offer a tongue-in-cheek celebration of '70s boogie raunch mixed with garagey punk moves, like some kind of mash-up of Status Quo, Mott the Hoople, and early AC/DC for a post-White Stripes audience. The resulting tunes are delivered with a near-total lack of seriousness — what else can be expected of a band with the stage names Joe Danger, Monty Carlo, the Count, and the truly excellent Cap'n Sextastic (it's the apostrophe that makes it) — but there's enough reckless rock & roll energy to keep Cobra Blood Hangover from being nothing more than a joke. Highlights include the twangy "The Give a S*****r Is Broken" (there's that lack of seriousness again), the ripping garage stomp "Say She Don't Mind," and the sardonic self-celebration of "The Ballad of the International Playboys." Three albums into the International Playboys' career, and the joke hasn't gotten old yet.
