Album Review

Drummer Antonio Sanchéz's debut recording as a leader is an impressive outing. An alum of both Berklee and the New England Conservatory of Music jazz studies programs, the percussionist has appeared on CDs by Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Avishai Cohen and Miguel Zenón. He leads a core quartet including bassist Scott Colley plus saxophonists Chris Potter and David Sanchez, with Metheny and Chick Corea as special guests on selected tracks. The leader's four originals hold one's interest, especially his percolating "Challenge Within" and the alternately tense and freewheeling "Greedy Silence." Sanchéz dominates the delightful off-kilter arrangement of Joe Henderson's "Inner Urge," playing freely against the twin tenor saxes, while Miles Davis' "Solar" is an unusual guitar/drum duet with Metheny. Corea contributed the infectious Latin-flavored opener "One for Antonio," a trio number with Colley that showcases each of the musicians. The quartet is joined by Metheny for the guitarist's hypnotic Latin ballad "Arena (Sand)."

The Album is Great - But What Is Up with the "Clean Lyrics" tag

Sanchez is one of the hottest drummers in the world. His work with Pat Metheny and his group is unparalleled. The performances on Migration are indicative of class, taste and monster chops expected from folks like Chick Corea and Pat. A great first album as leader for Antonio. We can expect great things from him in the future. A note about iTunes. What is with the "Clean Lyrics" tag on this album, which suggests that it has been edited. There is no singing on the release. Go figure? iTunes needs to step away from impacting any recording. All iTunes needs to do is provide access for the artist to sell their art (and collect money).

Top of the Line

Antonio Sanchez is one of the elite drummers and musicians around. I saw him perform with the Pat Metheny Group at St. Lawrence University in upstate N.Y., and then with Gary Burton and Pat Metheny and a few other great ad hoc groups at the Montreal Jazz Festival a couple of years ago. He is in demand and seems to be well respected by a lot of fantastic musicians. After seeing him, he is the real deal. His compositions and his playing on this album were great to experience. He did not take the album over with the drums. If you get a Roy Haynes album where Haynes headlines, you have to hear Haynes set pumped up over all the other musicians. Though Haynes has some great work, that type of album gets old fast and is not really a communicative experience. Sanchez is beyond himself and is collaborating with the music and the musicians. It is a real treat.
