iTunes Review

Contemplative, colorful electronica from the UK producer. On his sixth album, Simon Green explores the theme of migration through global sounds. His references are subtle, but not overly serious; he drifts from old-school Brandy samples (“Kerala”) to Moroccan Gnawa musicians (“Bambro Koyo Ganda”) with signature restraint (“Outlier”). There are a few high-profile guests along the way, including Nicole Miglis (Hundred Waters) and Nick Murphy (Chet Faker), but they’re not the main attraction—this LP is about the ride.

Bonobo has been my favorite composer for years now, and is the only musician I travel out of state to see, his shows are that amazing.
They have literally led to me realizing happiness is a choice we get to make rather than something we find.
His recordings are the only way I can hang on to the emotional and spiritual growth his performances give me.
NYE Midway SF was the best show I've ever seen. Still glowing. Thank you Simon.

Been a fan for over 7 years...

& and most of your albums if NOT all---are some of my favorite albums of all time. I am so stoked for this.

Skillful Restraint

Bonobo's older work has more rhythm and beat to it, so this album may seem slow or colorless to those expecting more of that. Instead, I see each album as a natural progression of what came before it: more focus on complex arrangement and soundscape. This is a continuation of that trend with Simon Green really putting in the work to make the music an immersive experience, rather than giving into the urge to throw in something more 'showy'. It may take some time as some of these songs are growers, but once you get yourself in the correct state of mind, it's worth the time to give this album one whole listen through.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

With the experimental warmth of '60s French films and the pizzicato flavor of horizontal hip-hop, Simon Green's Bonobo project established the welcome niche of a pretension-free, post-party intellectual chillout upon the release of his full-length debut in 2000. Since then, his sound and scope have expanded dramatically, with his sophisticated compositions and arrangements incorporating live instrumentation and encompassing influences ranging from jazz, house, folk, and soul to African, Asian, and...
