iTunes Review

This Hamilton, Ontario-based electronic pop group perform a diverse array of styles, ranging from artsy synth-pop to muted techno and sweet soul music. The emotive music space of “Playtime” works a sparse terrain where each beat and note takes on added significance while “Itchy Fingers,” which features musicians from Shanghai recorded during Jeremy Greenspan’s extended visit there, kicks up the chaos with notes that fly out of control. “You’ll Improve Me” turns up the romantic heat with a subtle pulse and more carefully arranged synths. “A Truly Happy Ending” recalls the synth-pop of the ‘80s. “Second Chance” brews up a soulful R&B groove with Greenspan and co-conspirator Matthew Didemus working the musical cracks of the ‘70s and ‘80s into a modern warp. “Kick the Can” is minimalist and engrossing in its elliptical movement. “Ep” dances around a stripped-down arrangement worthy of Prince. The nine-minute epic “Banana Ripple” finishes things with a mix of all the duo’s influences.

Fantastic album.

This album rules.

It's okay

Probably their worst album to date. It's not terrible but it's also not amazing. While listening to the album I kept waiting for a song to really stick out and be fantastic... but that never happened. All in all, It's a good album but a crappy Junior Boys album

Excellent record.

This album has grown on me over the past week and now it is one of my favorite releases of the year. I have seen some so/so reviews for it on iTunes, but I disagree completely. The album is a lot looser and less structured than their previous works, but I find that that works in the album's favor. The programming of the album is also more impressive than any of their previous work. Standouts are "Second Chance", "You'll Improve Me", and "Banana Ripple".

A Hamilton, Ontario-based electronic pop group, Junior Boys began as a duo with duties split between Jeremy Greenspan and Johnny Dark. Influenced by a number of underground and commercial sectors, including post-disco, arty synth pop, minimal techno, U.K. garage, and certain contemporary rap production styles, the two made a demo with no positive results. Dark opted to leave the group, but former Warp employee Nick Kilroy heard the songs and became interested enough to start the KIN label with Junior...
