12 Songs, 58 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Smith is at her most poetically inspired on her first album of new material in eight years. "Amerigo" and "Constantine's Dream" recount the New World's "discovery" in respectively edenic and apocalyptic fashions, with her stately take on Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush" providing a charming coda. Eschewing punk riffs for relatively lush arrangements, Smith celebrates Amy Winehouse in the doo-wop gem "This Is the Girl" and offers her most elegant pop song to date with "April Fool."

The Worst Sin of All

Having traded in her ferocity to become a hippie earth mother goddess who sees it as her job to nurture and enlighten us, Patti's committed the worst aesthetic sin of all: She's boring from start to finish -- although sometimes unintentionally hilarious as in her somber ode to Amy Winehouse. (Seriously, Patti, Amy as Jesus with her blood turning to wine?) Her every trope is recycled here to no effect, her lyrics here rarely rise above doggerel and her melodies are nonexistent. Which would be fine if she were still playing punk rock, but she's not. How the mighty have fallen.

Pure Patti!

It's been too long - 8 years without any new tracks. Patti, Lenny, Tony and Jay Dee deliver on Banga. Mature well written tunes that will make any Patti Smith fan happy and fulfilled. She is back - Patti Smith Group is back! The wait is over - for now I hope!

Grace and beauty.

Patti Smith and her music have aged with grace and beauty. This is not the screaming punk of old but then neither am I. This is the BEST album purchase/download of 2012 so far!
