Album Review

Hailing from Finland, Hanoi Rocks burst on the scene in the early '80s with their debut release, Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks. Producing themselves, the band took the energy and D.I.Y. attitude of the punk movement, and fused it with a love for glam rock to create an in-your-face sonic attack.

Their first release is heavy on melody and full of bravado. Lead singer Michael Monroe doesn't have the best voice in the world, but delivers the lyrics with a perpetual sneer that gives him character. Added to the mix is the razor sharp guitar playing of Andy McCoy, who rips off some impressive solos as on "Don't Never Leave Me." It's all great fun as the band never fails to lock into a solid groove and serve up highly melodic, high-octane rock. "Tragedy" has some wonderful vocal harmonies, and "Village Girl" is set to a tribal, percussive rhythm. A joyous collection of unbridled, youthful rock & roll

Customer Reviews

Great band! itunes has the wrong song titles though...

I recently re-discovered this band after reading Slash's book. He mentions they were an early influence on Guns n' Roses. I remember them from the 80's but never listened to them until now.
I was glad I did! The music holds up damn well. It is a great mix of punk, glam, and straight up rock n' roll.
For some reason the track listings are wrong on here. Songs titles for 4-8 are switched with the song titles for the same track numbers from "Back to Mystery City".
So, for this album the right song titles and track #'s are:
4. Tooting Bec Wreck
5. Until I Get You
6. Sailing Down the Tears
7. Lick Summer Love
8. Beating Gets Faster

Not your daddy's rock n roll

There was a time when MTV was starting when every band wasn't the same. Music was judged by the music and there was this thing in the record (that's right) store called an Import section. Well, this import was so full of p*** and vinegar I wasn't sure what to make of it. When's the last time a band did that to you? This is an album that can only be made by the young, with all the inaccuracies that serve youth so well. Definitely not my daddy's rock n roll. Buy it.

great debut

This album is so good. Especially the song Tragedy, luvvv it!

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Finland's major export to the world of heavy metal, Hanoi Rocks, drew much of their sound and inspiration from '70s glam rock and were thought by some to have fused the two styles more successfully than similar acts such as Mötley Crüe. Hanoi Rocks were founded in 1980 by singer Michael Monroe (born Matti Fagerholm) and guitarist Andy McCoy (born Antti Hulkko); after some lineup changes, the rest of the group consisted of guitarist Nasty Suicide (born Jan Stenfors), bassist Sam Yaffa (born Saki Takamäki),...
