iTunes Review

Sonia Leigh’s music has a road-seasoned honesty that gives her tales of high times and heartaches the ring of truth. 1978 December finds this Georgia-bred singer/songwriter reflecting on life and love with a survivor’s spirit. Leigh’s vocals—raspy, with a hint of sweetness underneath—bring out her lyrics' wry, sometimes poignant content. She bears her scars fearlessly in the moody yet rollicking travelogue “Ain’t Dead Yet.” Ornery honky-tonk tunes like “Bar” and clever, groove-powered numbers like “My Name Is Money” take her close to mainstream country. On the other hand, potent songs like the erotically aggressive “If You Won’t Tell” suggest that she’s too much of a maverick to play the Nashville game. Members of Zac Brown’s backup band support Leigh throughout the album, with Zac himself joining her for a duet on the Caribbean-accented “Roaming.” The mellow sentiments of “Virginia” (featuring Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray) and the soul diva stylings of “I Just Might” help round out her sound. By turns tough, tender, and revelatory, 1978 December deserves to win Leigh a wider audience.
