iTunes Review

Made in California is a 174-track summary of a rock ‘n’ roll supergroup. Its length is deliberate: this isn't aimed at casual fans seeking a comprehensive greatest-hits collection but at hardcore fans who'll appreciate the efforts to uncover rare material and offer alternate mixes, instrumental versions, vocal sessions, radio spots, and live performances. There are gorgeous stereo mixes of “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “Don’t Worry Baby,” “Wendy,” “California Girls,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice"; an "unplugged" 2012 version of “There’s No Other (Like My Baby)”; a session excerpt and master take of “Graduation Day”; a decent overview of the The Smile Sessions; live versions of “Vegetables,” "Summer in Paradise," and “Sherry She Needs Me” (with its 1965 instrumental track mixed with a 1976 vocal); and “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” celebrating the group's 50th anniversary on a high note. All this makes Made in California a hardcore fan’s dream—and a delight for any casual fan who desires an alternate path to Beach Boys enlightenment.

Buy the Whole Album for a Couple of Songs?

Am I reading this right? That I have to re-buy (again) all the songs I spent time and money buying and re-buying (so I can have a stereo mix on my favorite Beach Boys tunes), just to get a few of the new songs or songs I've been waiting for years to get? I hope that changes before it's officially released.

oops! never mind

disregard previous review- can buy individual songs-cool!

Like hell I’m paying $90 for this

Don’t get me wrong, the music is top-notch, and we have the first true stereo versions of some classics, like Do It Again. But they just keep bleeding fans, leaking out remasters a bit as a time while they find the tapes… Until the record company respects this band as it deserves, and puts out a definitive stereo studio collection, à la the Beatles Stereo Box Set, we’re getting screwed. That being said, pro tip: all the songs here (including Do It Again!) are legally available for individual purchase on the internet.

Beginning their career as the most popular surf band in the nation, the Beach Boys finally emerged by 1966 as America's preeminent pop group, the only act able to challenge (for a brief time) the overarching success of the Beatles with both mainstream listeners and the critical community. From their 1961 debut with the regional hit "Surfin," the three Wilson brothers -- Brian, Dennis, and Carl -- plus cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine constructed the most intricate, gorgeous harmonies ever heard...
