Killer Opera, no, really...

This is a stunning opera: music to rock you back on your heels, vocal lines that surf on the interweaving lines of music, a story that is poignant, timeless, terrible, apt, and with these two performers it all comes together. The English version is workable, though you lose the strange, profound sonorities of the original Hungarian. What you get in exchange for the loss of mystery is access to the drama and logic of words we understand, words that dance a dangerous, seductive dance to the death with Bartók's genius. This is music soaked in blood and gold.

This English bass moved in his early forties from a diet of basso cantante roles into the rigors of Wagner's Wotan, becoming, in the process, one of the late twentieth century's most imposing exponents of the role. Although he dealt initially with the higher stretches of the Rheingold and Walküre Wotans by a sort of crooning, he eventually grew into the part vocally, though at a cost in terms of vocal steadiness.
