Album Review

Moonshine Willy's jagged bluegrass-rock is one of the best things to come out of the roots-rock revival of the '90s. Bandleader Kim Docter's distinctly un-traditional vocals and savagely cynical lyrics create a unique tension between country twang and big city sneer. Who else could make the Human League's "Don't You Want Me" sound like it was always a country tune?

Urban twang with a bite

I remember first seeing the Willies playing at Rockabilly Night at Deja Vu in chicago way back in the early 90's. They were the only band fronted by a female at that time doing hard-driving work. While the other chgo-bands were busy talkin about their pompadours, cadillacs, or buyin Hans a 6-pack, the Willies wrote some good and twisted stuff (lucy and jack, 18 wheels, daddy cried when jane mansfield died)--good melding of punk-n-twang. Then comes alsong Bastard Child which shows a little more confessional work--some of which I think are Nashville worthy...well I take that back (esp with the crap that comes out of there). Standouts: the whole album. I recall seeing the willies perform in the late 90's--after kim had another child. Their drummer was late but they went on all accoustic--which totally rocked (banjo, slap base, fiddle, accoustic guitar, mandolin). When the drummer showed, it seemed out of place. Anyhew, too bad they've stopped playing. Last I heard Kim and Mike were somewhere in CA.

This Band Owns

I love Moonshine Willy. And not just because Kim Luke just happens to be my aunt ;-) It's very relaxing to listen to when you're doing something and need to concentrate. And Kim and Mike are currently in Santa Cruz, CA. I guess Chicago was just a tad too cold.
