Bathhouse Betty

Bathhouse Betty

Bette Midler's recording career has taken in the outrageously camp, the deeply moving, the schlocky, and even outright comedy, but rarely have all these been gathered on one album. Bathhouse Betty does the trick, sometimes mashing together a couple of the above-mentioned categories into one track. Highlights include jazz singer/writer Dave Frishberg's "I'm Hip," a seemingly eternal gem from the '70s that's also associated with the great Blossom Dearie; Ben Folds' "Boxing," a paean to Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell; forays into classic R&B with "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman" and "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show"; and "I'm Beautiful," which loudly sums up much of what appeals about the Divine One. The set is patterned after Midler's first couple of albums, and stands proudly alongside them.
