AWESOME!! A new breath!!

2017 looks like it’s going to be a great year for Madison Rising. To say the band is coming back fresh is a great understatement. With the incredible release of their latest album, Battered Not Broken, Madison Rising comes out swinging with such a velocity that fans who are familiar with their previous recordings will no doubt notice the “upgrade” to a awesome new sound.

While the group had some success with frantic versions of very familiar patriotic songs in the past, this latest recording more than proves that Madison Rising is a band that can rock out with the best of them. The patriotic message of the past still resides in songs, just not in your face as previous efforts. Because of this, the creativity and vibe of this latest recording has a much broader sense of momentum that will no doubt push the group into a larger group of listeners.

A huge part of the new sound of the group comes from many different changes including the addition of new vocalist Rio Hiett, A retired MSGT with the Air Force who has deployed several times. Not only has this serviceman performed incredible service for our country, his mission of bringing in a new modern sound to the band is amazing as well. The new songs fit Rio’s vocal style perfectly. Guitarist AJ Larsen also does some lead and background vocals which compliment Rio’s style flawlessly.

Every song on this album could easily be a single. Every one of them. The album starts with a great rocker named “Blood Red Sun”, which does a great job of letting the listener understand that this band isn’t playing around. Drummer Sam Fishman does an excellent job of really driving the upbeat rhythm into new territories not heard on previous recordings. Tom Dipietro holds it all together with the low end that provides a foundation that requires some pretty serious attention considering this album is much heavier than what we have come to expect from the band.

The overall flow of the album works very well. Filled with hooks, unforgettable melodies, riffs and lyrics that continue as the album plays through “Dangerous” and Coming Round Again”. The song “Another Messiah” introduces us to an eerie mood with it’s down-tuned guitars and piercing breakdown in the middle. “Where Are You Now” is about the closest to the older Madison Rising sound while the next track “Why Don’t You Hear Me” is more proof that this band is aiming in a new direction.

The album continues with more radio-ready tunes including “So Afraid” and “Madeline” which I could see as providing great reaction in a live setting. With the slower tracks of “Heavens Seas (The Beast Inside) and “On My Own,” Madison Rising provides a great soundtrack that I could easily see being played while driving towards a calming sunset when everything seems perfect in life.

The album closes with the heavy “Currents” track which is probably my favorite from the album. Not only is it one of the heaviest songs that the band has recorded, the track really does a great job of showcasing what the album is about, while ending the album with a big exclamation point (!), even though the song ends with an orchestrated segment. I can’t recommend this album enough. I can’t wait to see live versions of these songs. Yes, 2017 should be a very good year from Madison Rising indeed!
