Album Review

Although he's known primarily for the raw rock of his full-time band, Pearl Jam, longtime fans know that guitarist Stone Gossard has a thing for funk — as evidenced by his criminally underappreciated side project, Brad, and the groups (Weapon of Choice, Critters Buggin) he's signed to his record label, Loose Groove. Gossard's first true solo album, Bayleaf, was released in 2001 and, as expected, the CD contains tracks full of both up-tempo and laid-back grooves. While not as strong as his output with Brad, Bayleaf still has its moments and, although he's sung before on record (the Pearl Jam track "Mankind"), it's here that Gossard gets the chance to show off his vocal skills fully for the first time, singing lead on seven of the album's ten tracks (guest vocalists Ty Wilman and Pete Droge, who also produced the album, sing the rest). Individual standouts include the guitar-driven "Pigeon," the ballad "Anchors," the funky "Cadillac," and the sparse album closer (and first single), "Fend It Off."

First Review after 6 Years?!?

I am AMAZED that no one has reviewed this album yet. However, I should be honored to have first crack at it. Life long Pearl Jam die hards will have no trouble appreciating this record and the rich variety of tempos, textures, grooves and vocal stylings Stone offers up. His trademark quirk and irreverent wit come right to the surface, beginning with the album opener, "Bore Me." From there the music takes continuing turns into territory previously unexplored through his work with Pearl Jam. The bluesy "Fits" and "Every Family" contrast nicely with the guitar driven "Pigeon" and "Unhand Me." The title track, "Bayleaf," is a tip of the hat to sometimes collaborator Neil Young, with fuzzy minor chords stretched over a lilting drum beat. All in all, while I expected to apprciate this record, I was very pleasently surprised to find that I actually LOVE it and would easily recommend it!

Buy This Record!

Very laid back, mid-tempo rock record. Highly recommended for MUSIC fans, not just PJ fans. 5 Stars. Also, if you dig this check out the band Brad.

This is a great solo album

I haven't heard every song all the way through, but I have heard all the songs on here, and I was very impressed by Stone Gossards work. I love Pearl Jam, and Stone Gossard is one of my top ten favorite guitarists of all time. This is a great sound and I greatly admire his work. If you love Pearl Jam, then you have to listen to this.

Judging by Stone Gossard's credentials -- guitarist in Pearl Jam, participator in numerous side projects, guesting on other artists' records, producer, owner of a Seattle recording studio, record label chairman, and a one-time speaker at a House of Subcommittee hearing in Washington -- he is a true rock & roll renaissance man.
