iTunes Review

On Be Good, Gregory Porter continues to showcase his talents as both a jazz vocalist and a singer/songwriter. His sophomore album features 10 originals followed by two standards, almost like encores. Whether crooning on his instant pre-proposal classic “Real Good Hands” or delivering "Bling Bling" with a vocal intensity that the late Betty Carter would have approved of, the Bakersfield, Calif., native thoroughly inhabits his wise, observational lyrics. Porter’s band also shines, with Kamau Kenyatta’s soprano saxophone accompaniment on the explorative “Painted on Canvas,” bassist Aaron James’ dynamic solo on Nat Adderley and Oscar Brown Jr.’s “Work Song,” and drummer Emanuel Harrold’s energized-yet-disciplined playing on the wistful “When Did You Learn?” Empathetic pianist Chip Crawford, meanwhile, is Porter’s secret weapon. And with producer Brian Bacchus (Lizz Wright, Terry Callier, Randy Weston) on board, Be Good achieves that always-tricky balance of style and substance.
