Album Review

Salim Nourallah's now decade-long career, counting his initial duo effort with his brother, has confirmed him as a particular kind of modern pop classicist, at once plenty aware of an understated power pop tradition that has accrued over the decades and perfectly at home in the gentle indie rock world of the 21st century in turn. Constellation balances out these sides well enough, and if Nourallah's work succeeds at being engagingly pleasant rather than breathtakingly original, he still demonstrates his skill readily throughout. At its peppiest, as on "Western Hills" and "It's Not Enough," Nourallah fully brings the power pop jones to the fore, while "Love Is All Around" — not a Troggs cover, despite the name — almost feels like a gentle version of the "Merry Christmas (War Is Over)" performance by John & Yoko. There's a little more sting at points, as with the electric guitar crunch on "In the Blink of an Eye," but otherwise steadily easygoing is the goal throughout.

Incredible Record - A Must Have!

Great title - Constellations come to mind because it sounds like a soundtrack for sitting out in the middle of nowhere starring at the stars. Amazing record. I've added it to my art gallery playlist and my 2nd client in today thought it was Lennon singing. It took til my second listen to realize how little use of the drum kit and it still sounds incredibly full with percussion and harmonies. Amazing record!!! Anyway - Endless Dream Days, It's Not Enough, Pictures Collected, Love is All Around, and St, Georges are stand outs.

Constellation Sparkles - Be Prepared to Listen Closely

I am not one to normally offer words of praise for a special album, but there is so much depth, clarity, and texture to the mixes I felt compelled to break my normal silence. You can hear all the way through and are lured into the depths of these songs . . . I got the sensation that if I leaned towards my speakers, I would fall into the songs themselves. This is a wonderful album by an incredible singer-songwriter, Salim Nourallah, a master artisan in his trade, assisted here by the production and sound of Billy Harvey. As for particlar songs, the “single” (Don't Mind Me) is engaging and melodic. I prefer the album version of the song to the one released for radio play, because you can snuggle the melody and touch the nuances of the album version more so than the single mix (which, to be fair, I have only heard streaming online). Saint Georges is also an epic, perhaps the best song on the album and too good in my mind to be relegated to last track status. The snippet of Saint Georges here on iTunes doesn't represent what you get when you hear this song, which is one of those songs you play over and over after the first listen. Pictures Collected is one of the slickest songs, I can see it being used as accompaniment to the photo slideshows people love to make and show these days online and at events.

Fans of Beck's "Sea Change" or Neil Finn's "Try Whistling This", sit up and take notice!

Imagine you could tell the story of your childhood with beauty, grace and wit. Your life would unfold in thousands of shimmering colors, each moment revealing the essence of you, your loves and disappointments, your dreamscapes, your innermost thoughts. Now imagine that Salim Nourallah's new album "Constellation" has done exactly that, and has invited you to an inner circle of pop perfection to immerse yourself in those daydreams, that incredibly rich inner life. "Constellation" is a collection of subtle pop so carefully constructed that its construction is completely hidden, seemingly effortless. Gems like "Endless Dream Days" and "Stranger In My Own Skin" reach out in the form of Nourallah's beautiful voice, telling his stories and luring us into our own childhood memories. This is a gathering of nuanced pop poetry, able to engage, inspire and comfort over and over again.

Nourallah first came to the public's attention in 2001 with the release of two very different albums — Nourallah Brothers, a collection of intelligent and atmospheric pop songs written and recorded with his brother Faris Nourallah, and Self-Improvement?, the uptempo power pop-styled debut from Salim's other group, the Happiness Factor. In 2003, Salim also launched...
