10 Songs, 29 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

For Be Here When You Get Here, Setting Sun’s Gary Levitt tightened the songs; all 10 clock in between two and three-plus minutes, as if he’d just listened to the classic pop records of the ‘60s and new wave ‘70s and decided that quickness was key. Levitt prefers clean arrangements, putting pretty acoustic guitars at the center and giving bassist Jen Turner (ex–Here We Go Magic) the room to settle in. Her active work on “Down” provides a danceable pulse. “Selfish Love” comes across as a ghostly folk-pop tune, while “Idiot” suggests that Elliott Smith’s ghost still lingers in Levitt’s delicate whisper. “Leave a Light On” showcases a stronger sense of power pop than the stuff made by people who slavishly emulate it. “Seasons” and “Dream Next Door” create subliminal beauty, with exquisitely fingerpicked guitars and tastefully applied strings. When Levitt adds to the mix, it’s for the jagged “Week Long Nights” and the equally excited “Leave a Light On.” The duet with Erica Quitzow and Turner on “Got It Made” brings three indie talents together for another major highlight.
