Album Review

Imagine a group that consists of piano, bass, drums, and five to seven tubas. Howard Johnson, one of the mightiest tuba players of the past 30 years, has been leading Gravity since 1968 but this is their first recording. Despite the instrumentation, the group plays the music (which ranges from Don Pullen's colorful "Big Alice" and two of Johnson's originals to such standards as "Stolen Moments," "Yesterdays," and "'Round Midnight") with swing, creativity, and more variety than one might expect.

Great CD!

One of the pioneers of Jazz tuba. A great CD, with extensive, intelligent, but fun soloing. The multiphonics on Kelly Blue are awesome. The only drawback on this album is sometimes the tubists seem to stretch and spread their tone beyond good quality. But honsetly one of the "funnest" albums out there.

So fine-Howard Johnson

Where is the original so fine by howard Johnson please can you get it thanks?

Monterey Jammin

Saw this group perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival and immediately bought the album as soon as it was out. Fun is very descriptive and appropriate for this one. Howard is a great jazz artist, saw him perform at Cape May Jazz Festival also. I recommend this innovative album to all jazz fans.

The Alabama native moved to New York in 1963, where he worked with Charles Mingus, Hank Crawford, and Archie Shepp. In 1966, he started a 20-year off-and-on association with Gil Evans.
