Though The Youngbloods are responsible for one of the most emblematic tunes of the hippie era—"Get Together"—they never achieved much commercial success beyond that iconic tune. That means there are a lot of gems in the band's canon that casual listeners probably haven't heard. This collection combats that situation, cherrypicking tunes from the first three Youngbloods albums. At more than twice the length of the earlier anthology The Best of The Youngbloods, it makes for a more intensive investigation of the band's prime period. The Youngbloods came from a folk/blues background, and their roots are represented in adaptations of traditional tunes ("Sugar Babe," "Grizzly Bear"), as well as their incorporation of those influences into original tunes like "The Wine Song." But this package also documents the many other directions they pursued, from the cool, jazzy "Ride the Wind" to the elegant, orchestrated pop-rock of "Foolin' Around (The Waltz)." There's even a rarity in the form of the non-LP psych-pop single "Merry Go Round," penned by Mountain's Felix Pappalardi.
