Album Review

Boston's Edan has scored the hip-hop triple crown, rapping, programming and sampling at a masters level on his second full-length. As an MC, he bows down while hyping himself up on the wink-nudge titled "Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme," giving extended shout-outs to the history of hip-hop, from Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash through to Ultramagnetic MC's and Prince Po, all over a break as dusty and faded as an episode of Carnivale. "Polite Meeting" offers a beat and sample collage on par with the current work of DJ Shadow and RJD2, and one is left to really ponder at the possibility of Edan trying to perform the beats and vocals live. Def Jux bright star Mr. Lif makes a guest appearance on the heavily psychedelic "Making Planets," which leads into a full-on Hendrix-inspired freaky-blues interlude. Percee P and Insight also drop by to flow over some of Edan's time and space warping musical beds (to call these "beats" would be an immense oversimplification) but Dagha guests on the grittiest rocker, "Rock'N'Roll" which manages a full-on Marshall stack set to ten, and a guitar assault that somehow avoids all of the failings of rap-rock. If hip-hop had existed in the days of the Filmore, Woodstock and the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Edan would have been right on the bus.

a musical adventure

i first saw Edan perform and was absolutely awestruck- it was like a musical orgasm i was in disbelief and decided that it was imperative that i purchase this album. he is a phenomenal dj and incorporates so many different genres and techniques into his beats that create an unbelievable ride for the listener. he is also really hot and really lovely to see perform.

awesome

every song is a knockout, but i could listen to Promised Land about a million times in a row and not get sick of it. awesome rhymes and teriffic beats.

innovative

Edan's sophomore album "Beauty & the Beat" has to be the most creative rap album since Madvillainy. Edan's style on this is very outlandish too. The whole album conceptually consists of psychedelic sampling, moog intros, and a few splashes if some classic rock mixed into what I consider a top 10 contender for modern rap classic. Edan starts your adventure on a (somewhat outplayed) introduction reminiscent of a DJ Shadow interlude. That is, until you start to hear a moog start up into the next song where you here rapper Insight and Edan passing the mic back and forth through "Funky Voltron". ("Somebody throws a baby, oh sh**!/Do a spin move and catch it/and the crowd goes crazy") Edan lays some goofy punchlines throughout the album but also proves himself as an articulate lyricist on songs such as "Rock and Roll" (where he name-drops handfuls of classic rock bands but still retains a poetic mind). The track "Beauty" has Edan drawing a psychedelic-yet-vivid story that starts going out of proportion until it lands in the next song. Some catchy moments throughout Beauty & the Beat are the little jazz section on "Murder Mystery" and Mr. Lif's amazing verse on smooth strings of "Making Plants". Edan also shows some of his nostalgia-knowings in a few punchlines on "I See Colours" and even does a pretty good job paying respects to underground legends in "Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme". Beauty and the Beat is not for everyone, but hip hop heads with an open mind towards 60s rock will appreciate the production values and Edan's poetry. (9/10)

Biography

Born: Baltimore, MD

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s

There was a small but vital hip-hop genesis in Boston at the tail-end of the 1990s led by a motley group of artists (Porn Theatre Ushers, Skitzofreniks, 7L & Esoteric, Mr. Lif, Insight) who shared a number of musical attributes — a love of block-rockin' retro-beats and veneration for the hip-hop "new school" of the late '80s and early '90s, and a proclivity for irreverent, tongue-in-cheek lyrical styles, to name the most significant. Bedroom geek Edan (aka the Humble Magnificent) was the...
