iTunes Review

In December of 2011, Beck released an "album" you couldn't hear. Specifically, his Song Reader was 20 pieces of sheet music published by the indie publisher McSweeney's. A year later, 20 artists recorded versions of those songs for this benefit album (proceeds go to Dave Eggers' program 826 Valencia). From household names (Jacks White and Black, Norah Jones) to underground icons (David Johansen, Marc Ribot), the record is as eclectic as its cast of musicians. Sparks' "Why Did You Make Me Care?" is orchestral pop, while Beck's performance of "Heaven's Ladder" resembles the mellow '70s rock he dabbles in on 2014's Morning Phase. Tweedy's "The Wolf Is on the Hill" is recognizably Beck-ian, but Ribot's "The Last Polka" sounds nothing like him. Song Reader is a fun, fascinating album—and all for a good cause.
