Beethoven is a musical genious beyond his, and especially our, time

Any publication of composers such as this deserves a good review simply out of principle, but this album in particular gives us a taste of some of beethoven's most genius works as a pianist. The true test of a brilliant song is one that grabs you and takes you away to a perfectly expressed state of emotion. Works of music such as these are gems of intellect, something that is greatly lacking in the music of our time. Although a little over priced, this collection of music is worth the purchase, especially since it is particularly hard to find a download of all 3 movements of piano sonata no. 14, one of the most beautiful and moving works of the piano ever made.

This collection of artwork by Beethoven is wonderful in that the pianist is the same throughout. Many compilations of the 'greatest hits' of various composers have as many different performers as they have compositions, and it detracts from the quality of the CD because the style and tone are different from one song to the next. Alfred Brendel plays masterfully here and keeps the tempo true to what Beethoven had intended. The Tempest is my personal favorite on this CD, simply because it has such a variety of tempos and interesting variations of the theme in each movement. Listening to these pieces, one begins to understand Beethoven's methods.

Beethoven reincarnated

Alfred delivers Beethoven more convincingly authentic (if now a piano sonata interpretation can ever "authentic") than any other pianist. My absolute favorite.

Far from a child prodigy, he started piano lessons at the age of six, and although he studied at Graz Conservatory, his formal training was effectively over by the time he was 16 years old. A year later he gave his first public piano recital. Brendel's first recording was released in 1972,...
